  • Please complete our Custom Processing Order Form

Once your form has been submitted, we will contact you to develop a processing plan based on your fibre's characteristics and your desired end products. At that time, we will also provide a preliminary timeline for processing.

  • Storage space at Tailwinds Fibre Mill is limited. We will contact you a few weeks before we are ready to begin processing to arrange delivery or shipping. Your fibre should be packaged in new clear plastic bags (this helps us manage insects and spot rodent infestations quickly).

If you would like different batches processed separately, please package them in separate clear plastic bags. Each bag should include a label with:

    • Your name

    • Bag or batch number

    • Desired end product(s)

    Shipping Instructions

If you are shipping your fibre, please send us the tracking information and expected arrival date so we can confirm receipt of your package.

  • Once your fibre arrives, we will inspect and weigh it, then provide you with a processing estimate and recommended processing plan before any work begins.

    Fibre Acceptance Policy

Tailwinds Fibre Mill reserves the right to refuse any fibre that is not suitable for processing. This may include fibre with excessive vegetable matter, weak or brittle fibres, significant contamination, or the presence of scurf.

Any fibre found to be infested with insects will not be processed and may be disposed of immediately.

  • We will issue an invoice once the order has been completed. Payment is due within 30 days. If payment is not made within this timeline the fleece becomes property of Tailwinds Fibre Mill.

  • Feel free to reach out with any questions prior to filling out the form.  We typically respond M-F, 9a - 4:30 p.

There are a few things you can do to help the process run smoothly on your end:

  • Skirting is the process of preparing your fleece for processing. Remove any sections with manure, scurf, or with brittle fibre. Remove the fibre on the belly, the back-end and the legs. Even my industrial washers can’t clean excessive vegetable matter or manure; they will be discarded when I open the fibre prior to washing. Sections that are brittle will snap when they are carded and leave you with neps in your product. Scurf will stick in my carder and then each roller will have to be manually cleaned so I cannot process it. Be ruthless, wool and alpaca fibre are a renewable resource. The animals are growing more right now as you read this!

  •  I am regularly processing about ten fleece at the same time. If you are clear in labeling and sorting your fleece it helps me be organized in my labeling in the mill, and you will know exactly what you get back. It is surprising how many white yarns look alike! You may be able to tell the difference between your unprocessed fleece but you may not be able to when it is a finished product.

  • Expect about a 30% to 50% loss in weight from unwashed fleece to finished product. This is due to the lanolin and dirt washing away as well as the removal of short fibres and second cuts through the milling process.
